Pachelbel Schmachelbel Tacobell.

OK- this may sound sacrilegious, but I've been tired of Pachelbel's "Canon in D" for quite some time now. If you are amongst the many who *sigh* with a giddy smile everytime this piece begins to play, then I say: if YOU had to play it for wedding after wedding after wedding, YOU'D be sick of it, too. With that being said, I offer you THIS humorous monologue about the wonder that is "Canon in D"...

Still want to walk down the aisle to this one?

Hilarious

Last Saturday, Revolution Church hosted "Hilarious," a comedy event on the campus of Long Beach State. Headlining the show was stand-up comedian Carlos Oscar, previously featured on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" and Comedy Central. Also taking the stage was Michael Joiner (contributing writer for Jay Leno) and his son, Dustin Joiner, who have both made apprearances on various television programs. My role in the evening's event was to facilitate the green room. Consequently, I made several new friends!

Nader was a very capable, yet slightly angry, stage manager.

I think Dustin got an extra dose of confidence when it was being handed out.

Meet Eric Lapointe.

I was walking back to my office from the Library here at Biola when I saw THIS posted in the ground:

So, I thought I'd contribute to Eric's fifteen minutes of fame (now immortalized courtesy of my blog)!
Eric is my Life Group Bible Study leader and friend.
Eric also sings on the worship team at Revolution Downey (woot woot!)
Eric's favorite color is blue.
Eric enjoys chinese food as well as mexican food.
Eric's favorite movie is Apollo 13.
Eric works for Student Development.
Oh....excuse me....
Eric IS STUDENT DEVELOPMENT!!

(Major holla to Eric, who did NOT condone this blog. Heh heh.)

I'll try not to judge you when you use poor grammar.

I am HORRIBLE at a lot of things. For the most part, I'm not an athlete. I will never win a beauty pageant, I have no idea what constitutes a "cute" shoe, and I'm REALLY bad with numbers. However, I can spot a grammatical error a mile away! I will champion proper language skills until the day I die.

With that being said, THIS is NOT correct:

This was at a bookstore. So...ALL those books belong to one kid?

Um, do you KNOW what time it is?!

Sunday, 3:17 a.m.: (ring ring) Jamie looks at her cell phone, which luminates the pre-dawn darkness of the bedroom. The number on the screen reads +639164290 something something something... My barely conscious brain tries to make sense of this information. Phone numbers shouldn't start with plus signs. I'll choose to let this one go.

Sunday, 3:20 a.m.: (ring ring) Confused eyebrows. Is this really the same number that just called me? NO, I am NOT going to answer my phone. (places phone on nightstand and holds pillow over head).

Sunday, 3:41 a.m.: (ring ring) UGHHHHHH!!! Are you kidding me? I'd turn off my ringer, but my phone is my acting alarm clock for the time being. DANG the phone!! And DANG the person from Timbuktu who insists on disturbing my slumber!!!

Sunday, 3:46 a.m.: (ring ring) Al-RIGHT!!!!Jamie grabs the phone with a vengence and answers the call.
Jamie: "Heeeeellllo???????"
Total Stranger: (silence)
Jamie: "HeLLLLOOOO!!"
Total Stranger: "Hello? Hello?"
Jamie: "YES?"
Total Stranger: "Emee-ly"?
Jamie: "Huh? Emily? There's no Emee-ly here."
Total Stranger: ((click))

Well, thank you for that. I'm glad we got that cleared up. At least my cell phone minutes are free at 3 a.m.

School Days, School Days

All you have to do is step foot outside my office and you can tell....school is back in session. The campus is SWARMING with students old and new. At convocation this morning, we welcomed first time Biola students to this fine institution of learning, and I followed that by orienting our freshmen Education students (for some, this was their first college class!). I had a great group of girls this morning (as usual). Very entertaining! It will be fun to hang out with them for the next 8 weeks as we talk about their academic program, how their strengths apply to various facets of life, and what the Lord may be calling them to do in the years to come.

HOLLA to my new FYS students! If you find me here, show some love....
And we'll see ya in class!

Visitors!

Ah, the wonderous MAC. This summer I was greeted by all kinds of fun visitors in my little corner of Biola, and the trusty i-video was there to document it. Here are a few of my peeps that stopped by to say hello...

Matt (all the way from Ohio)

Eric (fellow Eagle)

Chris (from Minnesota)

Rebecca (from the office next door)

Silence.

An electrical problem in my car over the weekend landed the ol' coche in the shop today . And though the engine is restored to it's previous smoothness, I'll be without radio/stereo capabilities until I can locate the code to restore it. For a musician, being without music is the WORST. I'm trying to look at the positive. Perhaps God wants that time for Himself?

It'll be a quiet ride to work tomorrow...

Rollllaaaaa...

What do you do on a beautiful Saturday evening with friends in Southern California? You kick it old-school style at the ROLLER DERBY, baby! My brother (visiting from Nor Cal), Kaelyn and I packed into Stephen and Steph's sweet new ride and headed out to the City of Industry for some knock-em-down, kick-em-in-the-crotch-with-your-freaking-roller-skate action, and were not disappointed. It made me remember the days of yesteryear when my dad and brother would tune in to watch Hulk Hogan unpack his wrath on some evil opponent in the WWF...there were skaters flying over the railing, getting elbowed in the face and drop-kicked right on the track. And- the fans are NOT KIDDING AROUND. It was pretty out of control, but good for many, many laughs on our part.

I know you wish you could have been there, so I captured a little bit of the glorious event for you. It wasn't hard to capture a fight on tape...

Play Well With Others

People are often unreasonable, illogical and self centered…..Forgive them anyway.

If you are kind people will accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives…..Be kind anyway.

If you are successful, you will win some false friends and some true enemies…..Succeed anyway.

If you are honest and frank, people may cheat you….Be honest and frank anyway.

What you spend years building someone could destroy….Build anyway.

If you find serenity and happiness, they may be jealous…..Be happy anyway.

The good you do today, people will forget tomorrow…..Give God the best you’ve got anyway.

You see, in the final analysis, it is between you and God;
It was never between you and them anyway.

-Mother Teresa

D'oh!

Nothing beats his expression at about 0:18....

Ummmmm.....I don't know what to say about this one.

Shiver Me Timbers! Captain Jack is 1!

On Saturday, my brother and I crashed Captain Jack's FIRST birthday party- just in time to enjoy some tasty "rum punch" and YUMMY food! Beth has proved herself to be a superstar event planner- every detail was wrapped up in the pirate theme. The best part: seeing the smile on Jackson's face. He has so many admirers! Thanks to the Huttons for a great afternoon.

Mike and Beth welcome guests to the festivities.

Drew adjusts his attire before heading back to the boat.

A couple of pirates named Petersen.

...and a couple of pirates named Platt.

A cake worthy of the finest pirate company!

I think Jackson spotted the cake.

Minneapolis First Hand

Hi friends!
Some of you have asked about Chris' proximity to the Minneapolis bridge collapse. Though Duluth is a few hours north, he does have family that lives in the cities. Everyone was out in Monterey when the story unfolded, so you can imagine they were more attentive to the news than normal. Anyway, they're all a-ok...thank you for your concern. Chris DID get the opportunity to stop by the site of the accident, after having flown into the Minneapolis airport post-vacation. I thought I'd post some of his pictures here.

Boring Black.

This blog has existed for almost 2 years in the exact same state....boring ol' black. Though I like the clean-ness of this page, I'm getting a little bored with the format...including the template. Without switching blog servers, I want to spruce it up a little...but don't know how!! What should I do? Change the color? (I'm a black or white girl, so don't suggest orange or some other craziness.) Put a picture in the header? Add some sidebar features? If some of you have some simple tips for me, please help a sista out.

Let's spruce this place up!

All Things Left Coast

Ok- the last entry was feeling really long (I know...it's a lot of pictures) so I had to split it in two. This, therefore, is the second half of the fun....beginning with day 4 of our trip.

Chris and I purchased tickets to SPIRIT WEST COAST quite a while ago, and were excited to see one of our favorites- Leeland- at the concert. When I received the wristbands, however, I was informed that Leeland had been rescheduled for Friday. MAJOR bummer, but it didn't stop us from enjoying TobyMac, Todd Agnew, Sanctus Real and Switchfoot live on the stage.

TobyMac brings the funk.

I also ran into my old roommate, Heather, at the show...and rubbed shoulders with good friend Jack Paper (no photo...he's way too famous for that! ha ha).

Switchfoot....Daring me to move.

DAY 5...the final day of my vacation began with seeing friends Bobby and Rachel Marchessault (and of course, Caleb) at their new church in Santa Cruz. (If you peruse Bobby's blog, you may see a cameo by yours truly on the Worship Confessional.)

Following church, we all had lunch on the Santa Cruz pier, with a great view of the Beach Boardwalk. (Ahhhh, this takes me back a few years to all those high school youth retreats....)

On the LONG DRIVE HOME, we spent some time on Highway 1, which travels along the ocean through Big Sur and Morro Bay- there were several times we had to pull over and enjoy the spectacular views.

Ahhh, California.
